Sierra Leone is in a state of solemn reflection following the passing of Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray, the National Chairman of the All People’s Congress (APC). Mr. Mansaray transitioned on June 15, 2026, in Dakar, Senegal, following a period of illness, just days after observing his 75th birthday.

Known affectionately as “Uncle Minks,” his departure has elicited a profound outpouring of grief and respect from across the political spectrum.

His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio led the nation in mourning, characterizing Mr. Mansaray as a distinguished statesman whose commitment to the democratic advancement of Sierra Leone remains a significant legacy. The President extended his sincere condolences to the bereaved family and the APC membership, emphasizing that the Chairman’s service to the Republic transcended partisan boundaries.

“Sierra Leone has lost a respected leader whose contributions to our national fabric will be long remembered,” the President remarked.

Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh echoed these sentiments, noting that Mr. Mansaray’s humility and piety earned him the admiration of colleagues and opponents alike. The Vice President offered prayers for his eternal rest, describing the loss as one felt by the entire nation.

Former Cabinet Minister Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden lauded Mr. Mansaray’s intellectual prowess and his exceptional ability to maintain professional decorum during periods of political tension.

She highlighted his role as a mentor and his reputation for integrity and kindness. Similarly, former Vice President Chief Samuel Sam-Sumana recognized his unwavering loyalty and dedication to national development.

First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio and Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh also joined the collective tribute, acknowledging his lasting impression on the country’s political landscape. Hon. Abdul Kargbo, Opposition Leader, noted that the passing of the Chairman creates a significant void within the APC leadership during a pivotal era for the party.

The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) issued a formal statement of condolence, recognizing Mr. Mansaray as a dedicated public servant who prioritized peace and national cohesion. This sentiment was shared by diverse figures, including Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr and Kandeh Yumkella, who noted that his career marked the end of a significant chapter in Sierra Leonean politics.

Throughout his distinguished career, Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray served in various high-level capacities, including Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources and Minister of Labour.

His expertise as a political strategist and his role as an elder statesman were central to the stability of the APC.

As the nation awaits final funeral arrangements and the repatriation of his remains, Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray is remembered as a bridge-builder and a pillar of institutional memory.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mabinty Mansaray, his children, and a grateful nation.
