PAC Holds Oversight Session with Eastern Region Local Councils on 2023 Audit Report

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Parliament of Sierra Leone has held a one-day engagement with local councils on the findings of the 2023 Auditor General’s Report.

The session, held at the Kenema District Council Hall on Nyandeyama Road, brought together Members of Parliament, representatives from civil society organizations (CSOs), officials from the Kenema and Kailahun District Councils, Paramount Chiefs, and other stakeholders.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Ibrahim Tawa Conteh, said the Public Accounts Committee plays a crucial role in ensuring financial accountability within government institutions. He emphasized that the engagement with local councils, particularly in relation to the 2023 Auditor General’s Report, is essential to promoting transparency, efficiency, and accountability in the management of public funds.

Hon. Conteh added that such oversight sessions enable the Committee to scrutinize financial statements and ensure that public funds are used in line with existing laws and policies.

Director of Parliamentary and Public Relations, Mr. Sheku Turay, highlighted that the PAC’s oversight engagement with local councils offers both the Committee and the public a comprehensive view of the financial practices of local governments.

Mr. Turay further noted that the oversight process not only strengthens the financial integrity of local councils but also contributes to the overall effectiveness of public administration in Sierra Leone.
