Parliament Prepares for State Opening with Infrastructure Upgrades

The Parliament of Sierra Leone is undertaking extensive infrastructure and maintenance improvements in anticipation of the upcoming State Opening of Parliament, scheduled for Friday, August 7, 2026.

The ongoing project focuses on bolstering the institution's security, power reliability, and overall operational capacity. Key upgrades include the installation of a 555 KVA standby generator and solar panels to ensure consistent power supply to the parliamentary chamber during legislative sittings. Additionally, the complex is being enhanced with a new water storage reservoir, a dedicated police station, and 10 container offices.

Beyond building improvements, maintenance work is being carried out inside the parliamentary chamber. Simultaneously, the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) is conducting road maintenance in the surrounding area to facilitate improved access for the ceremony.

These enhancements are designed to ensure the parliamentary complex is fully prepared, secure, and functional for the event. The State Opening of Parliament is a pivotal constitutional occasion where the President traditionally addresses lawmakers to outline government priorities and define the legislative agenda for the upcoming session.

According to parliamentary officials, these efforts not only prepare the venue for the high-profile event but also strengthen the facility's long-term operational capabilities.
