PCMP Haja Koroma: Transforming Communities for a Sustainable Future

Demonstrating exemplary leadership and community resilience, Paramount Chief Haja Fatama Koroma is leading a transformative initiative within her chiefdom. She is guiding her people away from environmentally harmful practices towards a sustainable future.

Her efforts serve as a beacon of hope for a community struggling with the severe impacts of environmental degradation.

The Tima bridge, once a vital link between Freetown and Bo, now stands as a testament to the severe pollution affecting the river beneath it.

This river, essential for drinking, cooking, laundry, and agricultural irrigation, has been irreversibly contaminated by extensive mining activities.

PCMP Koroma highlighted the grave impact on daily life during her speech at the weekly government press briefing held by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education.

In response to this crisis, the villagers, united in their determination, have collectively prohibited charcoal burning. This challenging decision underscores their strong commitment to preserving their land for agriculture.

Despite external pressures to engage in charcoal production, the community remains resolute, enforcing strict by-laws that impose legal penalties on violators.

Acknowledging the limitations of traditional "brush and burn" farming methods, PCMP Koroma has advocated for a transition to swamp farming.

Over one hundred acres of fertile swampland are now under cultivation, with PCMP Koroma herself setting an example by growing rice and cashew.

Importantly, the community is actively training its youth in these sustainable agricultural techniques, nurturing a new generation of environmentally conscious farmers.

With steadfast determination, PCMP Koroma and her community are not merely striving for survival; they are building a future.

They remain hopeful that, with adequate support, their innovative initiatives will generate crucial job opportunities for their youth, ensuring a prosperous and sustainable legacy for future generations.
