In the rural districts of Kailahun, Kenema, and Karene, a transformative educational shift is taking place. The Pikin Tab initiative, a strategic partnership between Imagine Worldwide and the Sierra Leone Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), is leveraging digital technology to address critical gaps in foundational literacy and numeracy.

The program utilizes tablet-based, child-directed learning software designed to allow pupils to progress at their own pace.

This objective-driven intervention aims to reinforce core competencies in primary education, providing a standardized yet flexible tool that complements traditional classroom instruction.

Early data from the third-term cycle suggests significant gains in learner engagement and problem-solving abilities, particularly among students in underserved communities who previously lacked access to consistent educational resources.

This collaboration aligns with Sierra Leone’s broader national agenda for human capital development.

By prioritizing technology-enabled education, the MBSSE and its partners are working to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural sectors.

Education stakeholders emphasize that the technology serves to enhance the pedagogical capacity of teachers rather than replace them, fostering inclusive environments where innovation creates clear pathways for socio-economic mobility and long-term academic achievement.
