Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, has responded to the All People’s Congress (APC) Party’s rejection of Edmond Sylvester Alpha’s appointment as Chief Electoral Commissioner, characterizing the opposition’s criticism as an inherent and vital component of democratic politics.
In a public statement at State House, President Bio remarked, "This activity is characteristic of the opposition. They are obligated to voice their dissent. A silent opposition is a non-functional opposition." He underscored that he leverages such political disagreements to stimulate national discussion, referring to this dynamic as the "essence of democracy."
"We must engage in constructive dialogue," the President added, stressing his consistent history of involving the opposition in political discussions and debates.
He further noted that while various political reforms await discussion with the opposition, he has extended invitations for productive consultations at State House.
President Bio emphasized that his primary objective is to foster a national commitment to democratic principles and robust political participation among Sierra Leoneans.
By reframing opposition criticism as an opportunity rather than a challenge, the President seemed to be strategically positioning himself as a proponent of dialogue and consensus-building within the nation’s political framework.
