President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has commissioned the Manowa Bridge in Peje West Chiefdom, Kailahun District, marking a significant advancement in the government's rural infrastructure initiative.
The $7.46 million project, funded through the World Bank-supported Smallholder Commercialisation and Agribusiness Development Project (SCADeP), replaces a cable ferry system that had served the area since 1961.
Designed to link Manowa and Pendembu, the bridge is expected to catalyze agricultural productivity and improve market access for rural farmers, who have historically navigated difficult river crossings.
During the commissioning, President Bio noted that this structure is the fourth of six planned bridges under the broader government program, affirming that construction of the final two will proceed as scheduled.
This infrastructure development demonstrates a commitment to connecting rural communities, enhancing socio-economic growth, and reducing the logistics risks previously associated with ferry-based travel.
