Dr. Sylvia Blyden, a prominent member of the All People’s Congress (APC), has formally condemned recent statements made by President Julius Maada Bio concerning APC constituents in Bonthe District. During a public address, the President reportedly remarked, "Anyone in the Bonthe District who says they support APC shall die early in the morning," a statement that has drawn significant scrutiny for its inflammatory nature.
Dr. Blyden characterized the President's rhetoric as divisive and fundamentally at odds with his constitutional obligations. She referenced Section 40(2) of the Sierra Leone Constitution, which designates the President as the "Symbol of National Unity" and the "Fountain of Honour," asserting that such language undermines democratic stability and national cohesion.
"These developments are deeply concerning. As the representative of national unity, the President’s public discourse must reflect the dignity of his office," Dr. Blyden stated on April 6, 2026.
Her critique also noted a pattern of controversial public statements, suggesting that such rhetoric exacerbates existing political tensions within the country.
Political analysts suggest that Dr. Blyden’s intervention underscores the growing demand for ethical leadership and constitutional adherence. The remarks have elicited a broad range of reactions across social media, highlighting a national dialogue on the impact of political rhetoric on social stability.
As of this report, the Office of the President has not issued a formal rebuttal to Dr. Blyden’s criticisms. The ongoing discourse continues to focus on the necessity of responsible leadership and the promotion of a constructive political environment in Sierra Leone.
