President Eastina Taylor: Women in the Media Sierra Leone's new executives

Updated: Mar 27

Women in the Media (WIMSAL) during their Annual General Meeting on Friday 10th March, 2023, conducted elections for the offices of national executives. Madam Eastina Taylor was duly elected as President of WIMSAL, taking over from Madam Femi Coker.

All elected members were unopposed.

Femi Coker the outgoing President of WIMSAL expressed her need for individual empowerment of women in the media, to collectively ensure development of female participation for positive change.

She disclosed her support to twelve members for the furtherance of their education during her tenure in office.

She thanked members and executives of WIMSAL, past and present for their support during her tenure and hoped that the incoming President’s achievements will surpass her own.

The Sierra Leone Association of Journalist President, Ahmed Sahid Nasrallah said that though women are underrepresented in both politics and the media, he is immensely proud of their strides made so far. He statistically pointed out that though women make up more than 50% of the population, they continue to be represented by a bare 13% in Parliament and this remains baffling.

Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden reminisced that the initiative of WIMSAL was borne during electioneering period in 2007 and a new executive is coming in, as a prelude to this 2023 elections.

Other members forming the executive are Vice President Mabinty Magdalene Kamara, Secretary General Marian Tina Conteh, Assistant Secretary General Millicent Obries-Mansaray, Public Relations Officer Victoria Saffa, Financial Secretary Rachel Williams, Asst. Financial Secretary, Alimatu Jalloh and Organising Secretary Yvette Cole Smith

The handing over was conducted on the 17th March 2023 at the Harry Yansaneh hall SLAJ headquarters.
