Myk Berewa, Director of Communications in the Office of the President, has addressed public reaction to a recent comment made by Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, on a social media post by Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr.
The First Lady had congratulated Mayor Aki-Sawyerr after the latter announced her intention to contest for the All People’s Congress (APC) flagbearer position ahead of the 2028 general elections. Dr. Bio described the move as “courageous and inspiring,” highlighting inclusive leadership and women’s empowerment.
Following public discussion and speculation over the comment, Berewa clarified that it should not be interpreted as a political endorsement.
“The First Lady, whom I’ve known for years, would never endorse an APC candidate; she remains politically independent and is not aligned with the party,” Berewa said.
He explained that the congratulatory message reflects the First Lady’s long-standing advocacy for women’s leadership and participation in governance, rather than support for any political party or candidate.
While the First Lady did not comment further on party politics, the exchange has sparked national conversation, illustrating how remarks from high-profile public figures can attract political interpretation as Sierra Leone moves closer to the 2028 elections.
