Sierra Leonean rapper Natasha Backley has formally announced her candidacy for the Deputy Chairperson position of the Port Loko District Council under the All People's Congress (APC) party.
Her candidacy underscores the rising significance of women in governance. Backley openly discussed her musical career and the motivation behind her political ambitions with Sarah Kallay Blog.
She stated her candidacy is driven by the belief that women should be included in political roles due to their competence and capability. As an entertainer, she has chosen to embrace leadership.
Backley disclosed her longstanding political aspirations, which began in 2017 when she first aimed to become a Member of Parliament. Her earlier attempts in 2017 and 2018 were impacted by her dual citizenship status, which hindered her from representing Constituency 075.
Reflecting on her time as a Councillor, Natasha highlighted the considerable sacrifices she made for her constituents. She believes that with the community's support, Port Loko District is ready for a transformative period.
In an effort to inspire fellow entertainers, Backley encouraged them to pursue political roles, referencing notable examples such as the Ukrainian comedian who became president and former Liberian footballer George Weah, who served as president of Liberia. She emphasized that inspiration leads to aspiration.
Natasha concluded her announcement by emphasizing the crucial role of women's participation in politics for fostering inclusive and representative governance.
She highlighted that women in politics are essential for promoting gender equality and challenging societal norms and biases. She noted the increasing presence of women in political positions worldwide, with some nations achieving gender parity in their parliaments.
