Nejmeh SC clinched a crucial 1-0 victory over perennial rivals Al-Ansar in the latest installment of the Beirut Derby at the Camille Chamoun Sports City Stadium. The deciding goal came courtesy of Sierra Leonean winger Rodney Michael, whose clinical finish proved the difference in a highly competitive contest, igniting celebrations among the Nejmeh supporters.
The Beirut Derby, a fixture of immense cultural and sporting significance, began with a tense, tactical standoff. Both teams, vying for supremacy atop the league table, prioritized defensive solidity. Al-Ansar's initial offensive probes were nullified by a disciplined Nejmeh backline, anchored by Kassem El Zein. Nejmeh gradually gained a foothold in midfield, utilizing their wide players to challenge the Ansar defense.
The breakthrough occurred in the second half through a moment of individual brilliance. Following a swift transition, Michael created space on the periphery of the box. The former Indy Eleven player executed a sharp turn to evade his marker before unleashing a powerful, low strike that beat the Ansar goalkeeper into the bottom corner.
After the goal, Nejmeh demonstrated a defensive masterclass, successfully repelling a frantic late surge by Ansar. A combination of heroic blocks and a decisive late save preserved the clean sheet and the narrow lead.
This momentous win significantly boosts Nejmeh SC’s standing in the league, affirming their pursuit of the Lebanese Premier League title.
