The Government of Sierra Leone has committed over US$20 million in preparatory funding for the forthcoming 2026 Decennial Housing and Population Census, a measure officials cite as evidence of a robust national dedication to comprehensive data collection and strategic planning.

During a statement delivered at the Civic Day Series in Karene District on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, Samuel Ansumana, Director of Communication at Statistics Sierra Leone, commended the substantial financial provision. He characterized the investment as one of the most significant commitments to census implementation observed in the country.

This investment is strategically channeled toward critical operational components, including the acquisition of advanced digital tools such as tablets, geo-mapping and satellite imagery software, requisite vehicles, and other essential logistical assets. These allocations are designed to enhance the accuracy, efficiency, and overall credibility of the census process.

Mr. Ansumana referenced logistical constraints encountered during the 2021 mid-term census, specifically noting delays associated with securing borrowed tablets from international partners. He affirmed that the current proactive preparations are intended to effectively mitigate similar operational setbacks.

To this end, the government has ensured that census field officers will be provisioned with adequate, modern digital equipment and mapping technology well in advance of deployment to support all field operations.
