Sierra Leone Honors Fallen Heroes at Annual Remembrance Day Ceremony

Sierra Leone marked its Annual Remembrance Day Wreath Laying Ceremony on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at the Cenotaph, Ministerial Building, in Freetown, to pay solemn tribute to the nation's fallen heroes.
Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh represented President Julius Maada Bio at the ceremony. The event gathered national leaders, members of the diplomatic community, military personnel, and citizens to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in World Wars I and II, the Civil War, and other conflicts.
Distinguished attendees included Major Aki Swayer, Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr OBE, Chief Justice Hon. Komba Kamanda, Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, and the President of the Sierra Leone Bar Association, Mrs. Tuma Adama Gento-Kamara. Mayor Aki-Sawyerr's participation underscored the importance of historical remembrance as a foundation for national development.
A highlight of the ceremony was the laying of a wreath by Major Aki Swayer to honor those who died for Sierra Leone’s freedom. He also unveiled the design for a new memorial, commissioned by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, which will be installed adjacent to the cenotaph. The memorial is themed, "Honoring the Past; Shaping the Future," reflecting the nation’s commitment to preserving the memory of its heroes while looking toward a progressive future.
Dr. Jalloh also engaged with veterans of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, commending their profound sacrifices and unwavering dedication to the nation’s progress. He conveyed the government’s deep appreciation for their critical role in ensuring Sierra Leone’s stability and development.
The Annual Remembrance Day Commemoration remains a pivotal national event for reflection and unity, bringing together all segments of society to honor the bravery and selflessness of those who have served Sierra Leone in both wartime and peacetime.
