Sierra Leone Integrates Electoral Education into University Curriculum

In moves to bolster democratic values, the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), in partnership with the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) and the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, has convened a two-day stakeholder summit. 

The primary objective is the formal introduction of electoral and political education into the national university curriculum.

This initiative directly addresses Recommendation 13 of the Tripartite Committee Report, which advocates for continuous civic and political engagement. The goal is to cultivate a more informed and active citizenry, ensuring peaceful participation in the nation's democratic evolution.

The high-level proceedings featured a broad coalition of institutional leaders, including representatives from the PPRC, the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education, and the Council of Vice Chancellors and Principals. Senior university administrators and officials from the Public Sector Reform Unit are also in attendance to provide strategic oversight.

By embedding these subjects within higher education, the program seeks to empower the next generation of leaders with a comprehensive understanding of governance, civic duty, and political pluralism.

Over the course of the session, participants will finalize the framework and implementation strategies necessary to successfully integrate these vital concepts into the academic system.
