Sierra Leone Police Test Tear-Gas Drone

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) conducted operational testing on Thursday, October 22, 2026, of a newly equipped tear-gas drone intended for crowd management and public-order control in the capital city.
The exercise was led by ASP David A. Mbayo, Head of the Police ICT Department, alongside the Police Drone Team at Police Headquarters. Initiated under Inspector-General of Police William Fayia Sellu, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to modernize the force's technological capabilities.
According to official statements, the tests focused on evaluating the drone's functionality and operational readiness. Police officials emphasized that future deployment must strictly adhere to legal standards, prioritizing public safety and human rights.
ASP Mbayo highlighted the critical necessity for proper training, oversight, and protective measures to prevent indiscriminate exposure to tear gas, particularly regarding vulnerable populations.
While the demonstration marks a significant technological advancement for the SLP, key operational details remain unconfirmed.
The force has not yet disclosed a timeline for official deployment, whether final regulatory approval has been granted, or the specific protocols governing the drone's use during public assemblies.
