US Embassy Teams Up with Kei Kamara in Push for Sports Diplomacy

The U.S. Embassy in Freetown has met with Sierra Leonean-American football star Kei Kamara to discuss how sports diplomacy can strengthen relations between the United States and Sierra Leone and inspire young people.
Kamara, a dual U.S.–Sierra Leonean citizen, met with U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Meghan Moore during his visit, which focused on how sports can build connections between communities and promote stronger bilateral ties.
Kamara represented Sierra Leone’s national football team 45 times during his international career and made a significant mark in Major League Soccer (MLS), scoring 147 regular-season goals over a 20-year career.
According to the Embassy, his MLS goal tally ranks second in the league’s history, highlighting his achievements in professional football.
During the visit, Kamara also met with Acting Public Affairs Officer Jeff Barrus, with the pair sharing a light-hearted moment by juggling a football together.
The engagement highlights the potential of sports to promote cultural exchange, inspire young people and strengthen people-to-people ties between Sierra Leone and the United States. Kamara’s career in both Sierra Leonean and American football reflects the connections athletes can foster between countries through their sporting achievements and international influence.
