During the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA79) in Geneva, Switzerland, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, garnered international recognition for the country’s health sector reform model. Dr. Demby detailed the progress made in strengthening the national health system through strategic partnerships, political leadership, and robust accountability mechanisms.
Central to these reforms is the National Health Compact, a framework anchored by the principles of Alignment, Acceleration, Accompaniment, and Accountability (the “4As”). This approach facilitates a unified strategy—characterized by “one plan, one budget, and one report”—to enhance coordination between government bodies and international development partners.
Dr. Demby highlighted the Tokyo launch of the Compact in December 2025 as a pivotal moment in synchronizing national priorities with global support, emphasizing that effective implementation relies on integrated governance between the Ministries of Health and Finance.
Furthermore, the Minister connected the Health Compact to the Presidential "300 Days of Activism" initiative, noting that it instills the urgency and discipline required for measurable healthcare delivery.
Asserting Sierra Leone’s position as a reference model for operationalizing National Health Compacts, Dr. Demby concluded that the nation’s focus remains on translating policy into tangible improvements in healthcare access and accountability for all citizens.
