The Government of Sierra Leone, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, has formally acknowledged the full entry restrictions recently imposed by the United States on Sierra Leonean nationals, pursuant to a Presidential Proclamation issued on December 16, 2025.
In a press release dated December 17, the Ministry confirmed the shift from partial to full restriction status, noting that the U.S. decision was based on concerns, including visa overstay rates, compliance with repatriation of removable nationals, and broader U.S. national security considerations.
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to international cooperation and remains actively engaged in constructive, ongoing dialogue with U.S. authorities to address the concerns identified in the proclamation. Progressive steps have already been initiated to resolve these issues, including efforts to enhance document security, improve repatriation processes, and strengthen information-sharing mechanisms in line with global best practices.
While acknowledging the concerns of its citizens, the government assured the public that securing relief from these restrictions remains a high priority. Consultations are continuing, and the Ministry emphasized its dedication to protecting the interests of all Sierra Leoneans affected by the new immigration measures.
