Staff members of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation are currently on strike, citing concerns over inadequate compensation and directives from the board.
On May 6, 2025, employees of the national broadcasting service began a protest to address grievances they claim have been longstanding and widespread.
In a Radio Democracy livestream interview, an employee stated that inconsistencies in salary payments have resulted in some staff receiving wages as low as 600 Leones, significantly below the minimum wage, leading to demotivation and reduced morale.
Additionally, another employee highlighted the deterioration of the institution's infrastructure due to a lack of maintenance funds, and revealed that the board has recently imposed a directive prohibiting expenditures exceeding twenty thousand Leones, hindering potential improvement projects.
Some individuals suggested that since the departure of the former Director General, Mr. Kapuwa, the board has effectively halted all advancement initiatives.
Expressing significant dissatisfaction, staff members recounted years of service, spanning multiple decades, during which career advancement opportunities have been limited by financial constraints. They further emphasized that the wages received are insufficient for basic sustenance, let alone personal development.
No official statement has been issued by the government at this time. However, this platform remains committed to seeking their response.
