SLIFA FC produced a determined comeback to secure a 2-1 victory over Freetown City FC (FCFC) in a closely contested league encounter on Wednesday, strengthening their campaign while compounding their opponents’ relegation struggles.
Freetown City FC made a promising start to the match, taking an early lead in the 8th minute through Yankuba Koroma, who capitalized on a costly goalkeeping error. The early goal boosted FCFC’s confidence, as they displayed attacking intent and composure in the opening exchanges while seeking to extend their advantage.
SLIFA FC, however, gradually settled into the game, asserting control in midfield and creating more structured attacking opportunities. Their persistence paid off in the 40th minute when Ibrahim Sesay leveled the score, finishing a well-worked move assisted by Abdul Bangura. The goal marked Sesay’s ninth of the season, drawing him level with Randy M. George of Wilberforce Strikers and placing him just one goal behind league top scorer James Jusu Kanja of Old Edwardians.
The second half saw SLIFA FC emerge as the more dominant side, pressing higher up the pitch and dictating the tempo. Their efforts were rewarded in the 65th minute when Alimamy S. Kamara netted the decisive goal, reacting quickest to a rebound off the post. Despite having been booked earlier, Kamara maintained his composure to deliver what proved to be the match-winning strike.
Freetown City FC mounted late pressure in search of an equalizer but were unable to break down a disciplined SLIFA defense. Despite ending on the losing side, Yankuba Koroma’s early goal and overall performance earned him the Man of the Match award.
The victory moves SLIFA FC to 25 points from 23 matches, improving their standing on the league table, while Freetown City FC remain in the relegation zone, facing mounting pressure as the season progresses.
