SLP Marks Global Day of Police Cooperation
The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) joined the global community to mark the UN International Day of Police Cooperation under the theme, “Protection against Vulnerability – Building Trust and Legitimacy in Policing.” The event highlighted the shared responsibility of security institutions, communities, and civil society to protect vulnerable groups, boost public confidence, and advance accountable, people-centered policing.
Gathering stakeholders from government, civil society, media, and youth, the ceremony focused on building institutional trust, fairness, and mutual respect.
In his welcome address, Inspector General of Police Mr. William Fayia Sellu emphasized that safeguarding vulnerable populations requires robust partnership across security agencies, civil society, and international partners, noting that public trust remains foundational to effective policing.
Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Internal Affairs Rtd. AIG Morie Lengor (Esq.) underscored the need for coordinated national and international responses to evolving security threats, reiterating that legitimacy and responsiveness are crucial pillars for sustainable law enforcement.
Additional remarks were delivered by UN Resident Coordinator Madam Seraphine Wakana, National Security Coordinator Mr. Abdulai Cauker, LPPB Congo Cross Division Chairman Mr. Simeon Bai Sesay, and Civil Society representative Mr. Sao Lamin. Each highlighted the collective imperative to protect vulnerable groups and strengthen accountability.
CSP Brima Q. Sesay, Acting Director of Corporate Affairs, presented an overview of the SLP’s progress and challenges, calling for ongoing capacity building, adequate resources, and stronger community partnerships.
The event concluded with an interactive dialogue featuring representatives from the SLP, Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), civil society, Kids Parliament, and the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ). Participants explored joint strategies to foster transparency, mutual respect, and public trust.
The commemoration reaffirmed the SLP's commitment to deepening multi-sectoral collaboration to maintain a professional, trusted, and people-focused police service.
