SLPHA Attributes Reduction in Road Accidents to Strengthened Vehicle Inspections

The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority has reported a notable decline in road traffic accidents and vehicle breakdowns in recent months, following the introduction of stricter roadworthiness enforcement measures at its port facilities.

The development was disclosed by the Director of Technical Services at SLPHA, Mohamed A. Daramy, during an appearance on AYV Television, where he highlighted the impact of enhanced safety checks on vehicles operating out of the port, particularly heavy-duty trucks.

According to him, the Authority has tightened its inspection regime, ensuring that only vehicles meeting required safety and mechanical standards are cleared to exit port premises onto national roads.

“For the past months, accident levels have reduced drastically and there are fewer breakdowns on the roads because of the measures the port has put in place,” Daramy stated.

He explained that although SLPHA does not retain jurisdiction over vehicles once they leave the port, it plays a critical preventive role by screening and improving compliance standards before trucks enter the wider transport network.

“We only get control within the port. Those vehicles are not ours, but we try to improve on the standard of the vehicles and provide guidance and counselling,” he added.

Daramy further noted that the Authority continues to engage transport operators and drivers through regular stakeholder meetings aimed at reinforcing safety awareness and operational responsibility.

He said these discussions have helped strengthen collaboration between port authorities and transport unions, leading to better compliance with road safety requirements.

“We have port operators’ meetings where we discuss safety standards and what drivers should also do,” he explained.

He emphasized that the long-term goal of SLPHA is to achieve zero road accidents linked to vehicles departing its facilities, as well as eliminate breakdowns caused by unroadworthy trucks.

Road safety remains a persistent national concern, with authorities across Sierra Leone continuing to push for stricter enforcement of vehicle maintenance regulations to reduce accidents on major highways.

The SLPHA says its ongoing interventions form part of broader efforts to enhance transport safety, improve operational standards, and ensure safer road usage across the country.
