Speaker Suspends Probe into National Elections Watch

The Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, has suspended plans to establish a committee to investigate National Elections Watch (NEW), citing the sensitivity of the matter and the need for what he described as “proper judgment.”

The decision follows parliamentary deliberations on a motion seeking to probe the operations of the civil society organization. The motion was introduced by Hon. Sellu, who argued that concerns had been raised about the credibility of NEW, particularly after a press release from the Office of National Security distanced itself from the organization’s 2023 election report.

Hon. Sellu also referenced complaints submitted by a consortium of civil society groups, alleging irregularities in NEW’s operations, including issues related to financial transparency.

Seconding the motion, Hon. Ambrose Lebbie questioned the organization’s representation, claiming that while NEW asserts it represents over 400 civil society organizations, its active membership appears significantly lower. He further called for clarity regarding the group’s sources of funding.

However, Hon. Mohamed Bangura urged caution during the debate, recommending that discussions be held in a closed-door session before any formal decision is taken. He also pointed to what he described as inconsistencies in the arguments presented in support of the motion.

In response, the Speaker announced the suspension of plans to set up the investigative committee, noting that further consideration would be given to the matter before any next steps are taken.

The development marks a pause in parliamentary efforts to examine the activities of National Elections Watch, as lawmakers continue to assess the concerns raised and determine the appropriate course of action.
