Spouse Arrested for Alleged Drug Smuggling Attempt During Court Proceedings

A highly dramatic incident unfolded at Pademba Road Magistrate Court No.1 in Freetown when Zainab B. Samura, the wife of the accused, Joseph Kabia, also known as “Manager,” was apprehended attempting to introduce prohibited substances into the courtroom for her husband.

Mr. Kabia is currently on trial facing seventeen charges, including forgery, unlawful possession of arms, forgery of banknotes, and unlawful concealment of ammunition.

The security breach occurred during the court session while Mr. Kabia was seated. Ms. Samura entered the courtroom carrying a black handbag containing a white plastic bag. In a clear attempt to evade security detection, she discreetly placed the plastic bag under her husband’s seat.

However, prison officers Madina Sesay and Isha Bundu observed the suspicious activity. They immediately intervened, retrieving the bag from beneath Joseph Kabia’s seat and discovering an assortment of prohibited drugs. The discovery caused an immediate disturbance, highlighting the severity of the security lapse.

As the officers recovered the contraband, Mr. Kabia reportedly attempted to seize the bag from them, narrowly escalating to a physical altercation. The officers quickly restrained him, preventing the situation from escalating further, while witnesses, including Mariama B. Sesay, observed the unfolding scene in shock.

Ms. Samura was promptly arrested and is now in police custody. She faces charges under the National Drug Control Act of 2008 for possession and attempted smuggling of controlled substances without lawful authority. Investigations into her actions are ongoing.

Court officials have characterized the incident as a serious security breach, underscoring the inherent dangers posed when visitors attempt to pass contraband to accused persons in custody. A senior officer emphasized the necessity of heightened security, stating, “Court security personnel must maintain maximum vigilance at all times, as attempts like this compromise the judicial process and endanger the safety of all court staff and visitors.”

Joseph Kabia remains in remand pending his scheduled trial at the High Court. Authorities have indicated that enhanced security protocols will be implemented to prevent future attempts to smuggle prohibited items into court facilities.
