On June 2, 2026, committal proceedings were concluded for 21-year-old student Abu Bakarr Kallay, who stands accused of the murder of Mohamed Bangura.

The defendant is formally charged under Section 1 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, as amended by the Abolition of the Death Penalty Act 2021. As these were committal proceedings, the charge was explained to the defendant, but no plea was entered at this stage.

The prosecution presented testimony from DPC 18670 Mohamed Lamin Bangura of the Ross Road Police Division. The witness testified that on April 8, 2026, he received the inquiry file transferred from the Moyiba Police Post, which included essential medical and referral documentation.

Furthermore, the officer confirmed that on April 9, 2026, a voluntary caution statement was obtained from the defendant in Krio and recorded in English. The defendant subsequently verified the accuracy of this statement by affixing his thumbprint in the presence of witnesses.

Based on the evidence presented, Magistrate Mustapha Braima Jah ruled that the prosecution had established a sufficient case to warrant a trial, and the matter has been committed to the High Court of Sierra Leone for further adjudication.
