On April 8, 2026, a significant fire caused extensive damage to the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) headquarters. The blaze resulted in the loss of critical broadcasting equipment and infrastructure valued at millions of leones.

The fire reportedly originated on the building's top floor and completely destroyed the office of Deputy Director General Mohamed Asmieu Bah. Although property damage was severe, Mr. Bah escaped the incident without injury.

The incident has significantly impacted national broadcasting operations. Preliminary assessments indicate the destruction of several key assets:

  • Technical Equipment: Television monitoring systems and specialized broadcasting materials.

  • Operational Infrastructure: Computing hardware, office furniture, and mobile communication devices.

  • Administrative Assets: Official documentation and on-site currency reserves.

Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, visited the site alongside other government officials to evaluate the destruction. Minister Bah reaffirmed the government's commitment to restoring the SLBC to full operational capacity, emphasizing its vital role in civic education and the dissemination of national information.

Several prominent figures have expressed solidarity through direct support:

  • Dr. Ibrahim Bangura (APC): Provided a recovery donation of $5,000 USD and two laptop computers.

  • Josephine Kamara (Director General): Acknowledged the cross-sector support, stating that such unity is essential for the institution’s recovery.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire safety experts and forensic officials are conducting a thorough assessment to determine the origin of the blaze and evaluate the structural integrity of the remaining facilities.
