Teenager Remanded Over Alleged Le58,031 Housebreaking and Theft

An 18-year-old man has been remanded at Freetown’s Male Correctional Facility after appearing in court over an alleged housebreaking and theft involving cash, footwear, jewellery and chairs valued at Le58,031.

Alimamy Bangura appeared before Magistrate John Manso Fornah at Pademba Road Court No. 2 on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. He faces one count of housebreaking and larceny under Section 26(1) of the Larceny Act, 1916.

According to the charge, Bangura allegedly broke into the home of Sarah Tarawalie at No. 23 Cartton Carew Road, off Wilkinson Road, on June 2, 2026, and stole property belonging to her.

The items allegedly stolen included Le35,000, foreign currency, a plated-gold necklace, three pairs of trainers and three plastic chairs.

No plea was taken as the matter is at the committal proceedings stage.

Prosecution witness DPC 14061 Conteh M.A., attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at Congo Cross Police Station, told the court that Tarawalie reported the alleged break-in on the day it occurred.

He testified that he and another police officer visited the scene, where they observed damage extending from the veranda roof to the kitchen.

Conteh further told the court that photographs were taken and statements obtained from the complainant and two witnesses. The statements were subsequently tendered in court as exhibits.

The witness also testified that the complainant brought Bangura to the police station, where police later obtained a cautioned statement from him in Krio, which Conteh recorded in English.

According to Conteh, the statement was read and explained to Bangura in Krio, after which he acknowledged it by placing his right thumbprint. A further cautioned statement was taken on September 7 and tendered in court.

Bangura, who was not legally represented, told the court that he had no questions for the prosecution witness.

Magistrate Fornah subsequently remanded him at the Male Correctional Facility and ordered subpoenas to be issued for prosecution witnesses who were absent.

The matter was adjourned to October 13, 2026, for further proceedings.
