Tension in Blama Following Alleged Unauthorized Police Operation

Authorities have launched an investigation following a tense standoff in Blama on Wednesday, July 8th, involving six police personnel from the Kenema Regional Headquarters.

According to a report filed by a local officer, the six personnel had arrived in Blama claiming they were conducting a raid for illegal drugs. However, the local officer stated that the mission had not been properly communicated, despite a coincidental encounter earlier that day near the Saint Joseph’s school compound.

The officer noted that although they had identified some of the individuals as squad mates, the personnel did not disclose their mission at that time.

The situation reportedly escalated later that afternoon when members of the public, primarily local Okada riders, stormed the Blama Police Station. The riders alleged that the visiting officers had maliciously wounded one of their members, identified as Sheku Lahai, at the town’s roundabout. The victim was reportedly seen with a mutilated finger that was “oozing blood”.

Witnesses claimed that a former principal, Mr. Walter Sam, intervened to protect the police personnel from the angry crowd. According to the report, Mr. Sam rescued the officers into his bar, preventing a physical confrontation, and contacted local authorities to alert them to the chaotic situation.

Upon arrival at the scene, the local officer reported that no appropriate entries regarding the raid were found in the station’s movement diary, and the personnel had allegedly failed to properly identify themselves. It was further reported that the personnel only attempted to book the incident after being overwhelmed by the crowd.

Following the escalation, the Local Unit Commander (LUC) of the Kenema Division, Emmanuel Kpulum, reportedly dispatched a reinforcement team to Blama. The team took the six personnel into custody to conduct a formal investigation into their conduct and the methods used during their operation.

The victim, Sheku Lahai, was issued a police medical memorandum and has been referred to the Kenema Government Hospital to ascertain the level of injury sustained.

The community is reportedly calm, with officials noting that the Okada riders chose to address their grievances through peaceful means rather than violence.
