The ongoing legal proceedings against Lansana Dumbuya, National Secretary General of the All People’s Congress (APC), are drawing scrutiny due to the undisclosed identity of the complainant.
During an appearance on Liberty Online TV, Ady Macauley, an APC flagbearer aspirant and legal analyst, suggested that the ambiguity surrounding the complaint raises concerns about potential political bias and the selective application of legal enforcement.
“While one of the charges alleges provocation, potentially linked to President Julius Maada Bio, confirmation that he is the complainant remains absent,” stated Macauley. “If the President were the complainant, his testimony would be required in court. Consequently, the identity of the complainant is currently unknown.”
Macauley questioned the police's decision to proceed with charging Dumbuya, particularly since the All People’s Congress had already satisfied the fines imposed by the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC). He further highlighted that similar statements made by supporters of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) have not resulted in comparable police action.
“This situation is impeding the APC's political agenda,” Macauley added. “These actions are unwarranted and carry the potential to exacerbate national division, thereby threatening stability and security within the country.”
Dumbuya was recently remanded after Magistrate Brima Jah denied him bail during his initial court appearance. He has since temporarily delegated his party duties to the Organising Secretary while the court case is underway.
Macauley concluded by advocating for equitable, transparent, and consistent enforcement of political and legal regulations, stressing its vital role in safeguarding Sierra Leone’s democratic and institutional integrity.
