USL Revises English Language Entry Requirements for Selected Programmes

The University of Sierra Leone (USL) Senate has approved revised English Language entry requirements for selected academic programmes following concerns over candidates’ performance in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The decision was reached during a meeting of the Senate Executive Committee held on 2 November 2026, where members reviewed concerns surrounding English Language results and considered measures to guide admissions into the university’s various programmes.
The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone, Professor Aiah Randolph Lebbie, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to maintaining academic quality and upholding the required standards across its programmes.
Under the revised requirements, applicants seeking admission into degree programmes at Fourah Bay College (FBC) and the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) must obtain at least a Credit (C6) in English Language.
However, candidates applying for diploma and certificate programmes will be required to obtain a minimum Pass (D7) in the subject.
Meanwhile, the university clarified that the existing admission requirements for programmes offered by the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) will remain unchanged. The same applies to the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme at Fourah Bay College.
The revised requirements are intended to guide admissions into the affected programmes while ensuring that candidates meet the university’s prescribed academic standards, particularly in English Language.
The announcement was issued by Dr. Tonya Musa, Director of Communication and International Relations at the University of Sierra Leone.
