WAEC Renames Six Subjects for 2026 WASSCE Private Candidates
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced new names for six subjects in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates, following changes introduced under the revised curriculum of the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE).
The changes affect Business Management, Commerce, Economics, Financial Accounting, Government and Principles of Cost Accounting.
Under the revised naming system, the subjects are now listed as follows:
* Business Management → Business Management Studies
* Commerce → Principles of Commerce
* Economics → Principles of Economics
* Financial Accounting → Business Accounting
* Government → Politics and Governance
* Principles of Cost Accounting → Principles of Accounting
WAEC clarified that the changes apply only to the names of the subjects and do not affect their content.
The clarification was contained in a public notice issued on September 23, 2026, as the 2026 WASSCE for Private Candidates Second Series continues.
According to WAEC, the examination commenced on September 4 and is scheduled to end on October 28, 2026.
The Council urged candidates to take note of the revised subject names as they continue with the examination.
