The people of Yenga remain displaced and unable to return to their homes due to the continued presence of armed Guinean soldiers, according to Town Chief Mr. Tamba Nyuma.
Despite recent reports suggesting that residents were being encouraged to return and resettle in the area, Chief Nyuma has publicly rejected these calls. He cited the ongoing presence of heavily armed foreign troops as a direct threat to the lives and safety of his constituents.
The situation on the ground remains tense. While Yenga residents face intimidation, observers note a continued absence of Sierra Leonean military and police personnel in the region. Critics argue that this security vacuum, particularly along the Makona River waterfront, directly challenges the Sierra Leonean government’s claims of administrative authority over the territory.
Chief Nyuma sharply criticized the current administration, describing the government's approach to the Yenga issue as hasty and a "dereliction of duty."
Representing the demands of the Kailahun community, the Town Chief has outlined three critical conditions for any potential return:
Withdrawal of Foreign Troops: The immediate removal of all Guinean military forces from Sierra Leonean territory.
Security Deployment: The establishment of a visible and active presence by Sierra Leonean security forces in Yenga prior to any resettlement efforts.
Safety Guarantees: A firm commitment that residents will be protected before they are asked to return home.
The government has yet to issue an official response to these specific demands from the Yenga community leadership.
