  • SLFA meets with CAF President Motsepe and WAFU Zone-A Executive

    On Wednesday, July 12, 2023, three senior Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) officials met with CAF President Patrice Motsepe and WAFU-A zonal Executive Members at the Sofitel Hotel in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The meeting focused on the CAF playing venue requirement for competitions in all categories. SLFA President Thomas Daddy appealed to CAF to "reassess their strategy on stadium inspection," noting that "some of the stadiums used in other continents for FIFA World Cup qualifiers are not better than the stadiums banned in Africa." He also requested that CAF consideration be given to member associations with playable stadium facilities away from the capital with specific reference to Sierra Leone. The meeting was one of the zonal consultations held ahead of CAF's 45th Ordinary General Assembly, which is scheduled to take place in Abidjan on July 14, 2023.

  • SLFA signs agreement with Edel Grass to Construct Four New Artificial Turf Pitches

    The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has officially signed a contract with Edel Grass to construct four new artificial turf pitches at the Approved School and SLFA Academy in Freetown, Port Loko Town Field, and Coronation Field in Bo. The contract also includes upgrading the standards of Kono Field and Kenema Town Fields. The signing ceremony took place on July 11, 2023, at the SLFA headquarters in Freetown. The Vice President 1 of the SLFA, Harold Nat Johnson, and Mark Jonkers of Edel Grass exchanged pleasantries before signing the contract, which they believe will improve the quality of play of their players in clubs and national team levels. They will provide much-needed playing surfaces for football players in Sierra Leone. The upgraded Kono Field and Kenema Town Fields will also be a welcome addition to the country 's football infrastructure. The new artificial turf pitches are expected to be completed by the end of 2023. This move has been commended as a sign of progress for the SLFA, which is committed to developing football in Sierra Leone.

  • Bo Rangers to represent Sierra Leone in the WACC's Second Edition in Guinea (2023)

    Bo Rangers, the champions of the Sierra Leone Premier League, will participate in the second edition of the West Africa Champions Cup (WACC) in Guinea from August 7-13, 2023. The WACC is a tournament designed to help West African clubs prepare for the upcoming CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup competitions. The tournament will feature the champions of seven West African countries: Togo, Benin, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Senegal and Sierra Leone. The first edition of the WACC was held in Guinea in 2022. Horoya AC (Guinea), SOAR (Guinea), Casamance Sporting Club (Senegal), and Djoliba AC (Mali) participated in the tournament, with Horoya AC winning the title. The WACC is a valuable opportunity for West African clubs to get some much-needed competitive action before the start of the CAF interclubs competitions. The tournament will also help to improve the standard of football in West Africa.

  • Mighty Blackpool’s Chairman Rodney Michael extols SLFA Acting Secretary General Mohamed Benson Bawoh

    The Chairman of Mighty Blackpool Football Club, Rodney Michael, has praised Mohamed Benson Bawoh, who is the acting Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), as exceptionally capable of handling pressure. He made his disclosure after Bawoh's conduct during the SLFA Ordinary Congress after observing his handling of responsibilities given to him as acting General Secretary. According to Michael, Bawoh, who came under fire from some members of the football community, maintained a calm demeanor and firmly persuaded members into agreement. This Michael commended since he was expecting an overreaction, but Bawoh exhibited maturity and good administrative potential. Michael believes that this shows that Bawoh has the temperament and the skills to be a successful General Secretary of the SLFA. Michael also noted that Bawoh has a strong background in football administration having worked with the SLFA for many years, and he has a deep understanding of the sport in Sierra Leone. Michael believes that this experience will be invaluable to Bawoh if he is appointed as General Secretary. Conclusively, Michael said that he is excited about the future of Sierra Leonean football under Bawoh's leadership. He believes that Bawoh has the potential to help the sport to grow and to reach new heights in the country. If Bawoh continues in this manner, the sky will be his limit. I am confident that he will be a great General Secretary for the SLFA.

  • AS Elite Goalkeeping Academy, trains 52 Youngsters as goalkeepers in Sierra Leone

    An established goalkeeping academy, AS Elite Academy, has commenced training of young men wanting to build a career path in football, specifically as goalkeepers. With the multitude of talented young men in Sierra Leone, many who have expressed the desire to be goalkeepers were unaware about the availability of such an academy, dedicated to honing their talent. With this first hand knowledge, Idrissa Kallon, a former goalkeeper who represented 13th Legion and Fourah Bay United took it upon himself to establish the AS Elite goalkeeping academy in 2022. Kallon who recently hosted a training session for youngsters at the Fourah Bay field, said talent is essential but finessing skill takes patience and determination from both trainee and trainer. According to Kallon, some of his trainees are working with teams of future legends, dreams foundation, Hada FC, Biddy and Wessels already and his task at hand is to ensure they become heavily sought after. where he shared useful insights on goalkeeping. Andy Sheridan, the CEO of the AS Elite Academy and a former goalkeeper himself, shared with us his vows to support the academy's vision and create a viable environment for growth. With the right support, the academy has the potential to produce world-class goalkeepers who can help the Leone Stars achieve success on the international stage.

  • Meet the women of President Bio's new Cabinet

    His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has today 10th July 2023, released a list of his first appointees into cabinet and other positions. Among the list of old and new names, President Bio made an appointment of seven women into substantive and Deputy Ministerial positions, out of a total of seventeen. This puts the percentage of female representatives of his first appointment at 41%, a fulfillment of the GEWE quota of 30% of women in appointed positions for public office. One of the two substantive Ministers is Dr. Ramatulai Wurie, appointed as the Minister of Higher and Technical Education. She was serving as the Senior Lecturer and Multi-disciplinary researcher at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, University of Sierra Leone. Another Substantive Minister is Ms. Manti Tarawalli, appointed as a Minister of State in the Vice President's Office. She was serving as the Minister of Gender and Children's Affairs and a pioneer of the Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment(GEWE) law. Madam Jeneba Bangura, former Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority has been appointed as Deputy MInister 1 of the Ministry of Finance. Mrs. Francess Paigie Alghali who has been appointed as the Deputy Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs was serving as a MInister of State in the Vice President's Office. Madam Emily K. Gogra and Madam Mamusu Massaquoi maintained their position as Deputy Minister one and two of the Ministry of Basic & Senior Secondary Education. Madam Fatmata Wurie who has been appointed as Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry is the current Chairperson for the Washington Chapter of the Sierra Leone People's Party.

    His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio has today 10th July 2023, released a list of his first appointees into cabinet and other positions. Expectedly after the elections of 24th June 2023, the President made a release of new and old names, with the latter reshuffled into different positions. Most notable among the names are the Former Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, promoted to the position of Chief Minister, a most coveted spot. Former Minister of Mines and Minerals Dr. Timothy Kabba was also promoted to the ministerial position of Foreign Affairs and international Cooperation, whilst Mr. Sheku Fantamadi Bangura maintained his position as Minister of Finance and similarly the Attorney General and Minister of Justice Mr. Mohamed Lamin Tarawally was retained in his office. The names of seven women formed part of the list of substantive and Deputy Ministers, putting his percentage of female representatives of his first appointment at 41%, a fulfillment of the GEWE quota of 30% of women in appointed positions for public office.

  • Bo Rangers Goalkeeper Ibrahim Sesay Delighted with Team's Unbeaten Streak

    Bo Rangers goalkeeper Ibrahim Sesay has expressed huge delight at conceding only five goals in his team's 32-match unbeaten streak in the Sierra Leone Premier League. The 19-year-old Sesay, who rose through the ranks of Hopanda Rovers in Rutile, Sierra Leone, in 2004, made his first top-flight appearance under former East End Tigers coach Musa Jalloh and Chairman Victor Lewis. He has since gone on to represent Sierra Leone's senior men's national team, the Leone Stars, on several occasions, including the five-goal thriller against the Super Eagles of Nigeria last month in Liberia. Sesay, who admires Inter Milan and Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana, said his dream is to play for a top European club one day. "I am very happy with the team's unbeaten streak," Sesay said. "We have worked hard and it is paying off. I am also proud to have represented my country at the highest level." Sesay added: "I admire Andre Onana a lot. Bo Rangers are currently top of the Sierra Leone Premier League table with 76 points and are awaiting coronation soon enough.

  • Sierra Leone Under-19 Cricket Team to Participate in two International Tournaments

    The Sierra Leone Under-19 Cricket team is preparing to participate in two international tournaments later this year, a new arena to showcase their skills on the global stage and inspire young cricketers in Sierra Leone. Cricket Sierra Leone's recently hired South African high-tech coach, Kenneth Masinga, is perfecting the drives and deliveries of the Under-19 boys as they prepare to participate in the ICC Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup Africa Division 1 Qualifier in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania later this July. To sort out issues around acclimatization and to put the new selection to a foreign test prior to the end-of-July preliminary qualification, 14 players along with Coach Masinga and a Team Manager will depart the shores of Sierra Leone on July 16 for Tanzania for a week-long training before the qualification commences. The squad will undergo further workouts on the foreign soil and will play a series of matches with local clubs before the start of the six-nation tournament. According to the Media department of SLCA, the winner in this African segment will progress to the World Cup. Next to the Tanzania Cricket Showpiece is the Senior Men's ACA T20 Cup-North Africa Qualifiers, scheduled for August in South Africa. Six countries will battle for the top two that will enter the All African finals slated for September in South Africa. Back home, Cricket Sierra Leone is working hard to secure the support of the government in order to give the team the best possible chance of success. The government's support would be a huge boost for the team to deliver national victories and would help to calm the nerves of the country's cricket fans.   • SLFA agrees to reduce teams in the Premier League games during their three days Ordinary Congress

    The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) held its 2023 statutory Ordinary Congress on Wednesday, July 5, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Freetown with the Minister of Sports Ibrahim Nyelenkeh, Executive Director of the National Sports Authority Dr. Kenneth Brima, and the President of the National Olympic Committee Prince Suallay, along with other important stakeholders. The focus of the Congress was the development of the country's football, specifically the adoption of a new football ecosystem. The new system seeks to gradually reduce teams in the Sierra Leone Premier League from the current 18 teams to 12 teams by the 2025/26 league season. This was unanimously embraced by the delegates as some of them described the system as "a step in the right direction." In his keynote address, SLFA President Thomas Daddy Brima disclosed to congress developmental projects that will soon be implemented including the construction of new artificial turf pitches at the SLFA Academy Field, approved School Field, Port Loko Town Field, and Bo Coronation Field. Brima also announced that the Kono artificial turf pitch will be renovated with a perimeter fence, while the Kenema pitch will be equipped with standard floodlights. The said projects are set to commence in August 2023 as the Netherland based contractors representing Edel Grass are expected to arrive in Freetown on between July 7th-10th July to complete the necessary documentations. The congress, seen as a success, was lauded as a renewed commitment to developing football in Sierra Leone.
