18 Soldiers Remembered at Defence Headquarters Two Years After Coup Attempt

The Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) held an inter-faith service on 26 November 2025 at Defence Headquarters, Cockerill Barracks, to honour the 18 military personnel who lost their lives during the November 26, 2023, coup attempt.

The ceremony paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of the fallen soldiers and provided a moment of reflection for both the military and the nation.

The 2023 incident is widely regarded as a severe test of Sierra Leone’s democracy. In the early hours of that Sunday, gunmen broke into the armory at Wilberforce Barracks and launched coordinated attacks on other military stations across Freetown. The violence later spread to Pademba Road Correctional Center, the country’s main custodial facility, leading to the escape of over a thousand inmates and escalating chaos in the capital.

Security forces acted swiftly to quell the unrest. Those responsible, including civilians and renegade soldiers, were apprehended, tried, convicted, and handed lengthy prison sentences. Their decisive response restored order and prevented further destabilization of the country.

The inter-faith service provided a solemn occasion to honour the memory of the 18 soldiers who gave their lives defending the nation. Military and government officials, along with members of the public, attended to pay their respects. The event also offered Sierra Leoneans an opportunity to reflect on a dark chapter in the country’s history and reaffirm their commitment to peace, stability, and the protection of democratic institutions.

Officials described the service not only as a tribute to the courage of the fallen but also as a reminder of the resilience of Sierra Leone’s armed forces and the enduring spirit of the nation.
