Moving to fortify the nation's critical maritime infrastructure, 70 security personnel from the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) have successfully completed an intensive two-week professional development program.

Hosted at the Sierra Leone Peacekeeping and Law Enforcement Academy (SILEA) in Hastings, the rigorous curriculum combined academic coursework with comprehensive drill, parade, and physical conditioning.

Addressing attendees during Saturday's passing-out ceremony on October 3, 2026, SLPHA Deputy Director General Judith Kosseh highlighted the strategic milestone, framing the graduation as a essential step in safeguarding national trade interests.

With over 90 percent of Sierra Leone’s commerce flowing through its maritime gates, Kosseh underscored the paramount necessity of uncompromised vigilance and effective security operational standards.

“A secured port is a secured nation,” Kosseh stated, emphasizing the direct link between port safety and national economic stability.

Challenge and duty formed the core of her message to the graduates, reminding them that they have transitioned from conventional guards into elite Port Facility Security Personnel tasked with executing their responsibilities in full alignment with international maritime security protocols.

She urged the new officers to exemplify unwavering professionalism, discipline, and integrity as line defenders of port infrastructure, cargo, staff, and international partners.

Furthermore, Kosseh called upon the cadre to actively leverage their newly honed expertise to drive seamless, safe, and efficient port operations.

SILEA Commandant, ACP Brima Kamara, noted that the training framework targeted three core operational pillars: academic instruction, tactical drill, and physical readiness.

Equipped with enhanced tactical capabilities, the personnel are now better prepared to detect and neutralize emerging threats, enforce strict access-control protocols, and maintain overall facility safety.

This initiative reflects SLPHA’s broader strategy to continually upskill its force and uphold compliance with global maritime security standards.
