SLAJ Extols Supreme Court for Approving Live Constitutional Hearing Coverage

In a statement issued today, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has welcomed the approval granted by the Chief Justice for the live broadcast of the upcoming Supreme Court hearing on constitutional matters scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

This decision followed a formal request submitted by SLAJ to the Judiciary on September 21, 2026, advocating for live proceedings in the public interest due to the national significance of the case.

The Judiciary approved the request subject to specific conditions intended to maintain the Court's dignity, decorum, and integrity.

Under the finalized arrangements, 10 media outlets will receive accreditation to cover the hearing from inside the courtroom. SLAJ is coordinating media coverage in partnership with the Sierra Leone Court Reporters Association (SLCRA) and the Judiciary's Communications and Public Affairs Unit.

Unaccredited journalists and members of the general public will be able to follow the live broadcast through major national television networks.

Following a special appeal by SLAJ, the Independent Radio Network (IRN) was also granted permission to broadcast the hearing live across its network of more than 40 radio stations nationwide.

The Judiciary instructed that no commentary, analysis, or external statements regarding the merits of the case should be made while the matter remains sub judice.

Furthermore, still photography will not be permitted inside the courtroom during the proceedings.

SLAJ urged all participating media houses and journalists to adhere to high standards of professionalism, accuracy, and impartiality, while respecting the authority and decorum of the Court.

SLAJ stated it will continue to work alongside the Judiciary's Communications and Public Affairs Unit and accredited outlets to ensure coverage remains orderly, professional, and compliant with established court rules.
