Farmer Committed for Manslaughter as Mason Gets 12 Months for Larceny

A 62-year-old farmer, Mathew Kortuma, of Mbaoma Sassally Village in Kenema District, has been committed to the High Court in Kenema to stand trial for manslaughter.

Kortuma was brought before Magistrate Hadiru Daboh of Magistrate Court No. 1 in Kenema on one count of manslaughter, contrary to Section 5 of the Offences Against the Person Act of 1861, as repealed and replaced by Section 1(b) of the Schedule to the Abolition of the Death Penalty Act of 2022.

The charge was read to the accused by Moses Ganawa, Registrar of the Court. The prosecution alleged that on May 25, 2026, at Mbaoma Sassally Village in Gorama Mende Chiefdom, Kenema Judicial District, Eastern Province, Kortuma unlawfully killed Fatorma Fallay.

The offence is indictable, and Kortuma relied on his statement made at the police station.

After considering the evidence presented before the court, Magistrate Daboh ruled that the prosecution had provided sufficient evidence to warrant the committal of the matter to the High Court for trial.

Kortuma was therefore committed to the High Court in Kenema for the matter to proceed.

Mason Sentenced to 12 Months for Larceny

In a separate matter, Bockarie Konneh, a mason from Heigbema Section in Kenema, has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to larceny.

According to court records, Konneh stole a Carmon Thirty (30) dual-SIM mobile phone valued at NLe7,000, belonging to Baindu Sheriff, in August 2026 at Heigbema Section in Kenema.

Konneh pleaded guilty to the charge and appealed to the court for mercy.

Magistrate Hadiru Daboh subsequently sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment at the Sierra Leone Correctional Centre in Kenema, or to pay the value of the stolen property.

The two matters were prosecuted separately by Sergeant Bakarr Watta and Sergeant Davis Idriss.
