Amadou Bakayoko Signs Contract Extension with Japanese Club

Sierra Leone international striker Amadou Bakayoko has given a major boost to Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo by signing a one-and-a-half-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2027.

The move underscores the club’s intent to build their future around the towering forward’s physical presence and goal-scoring ability.

Since joining the Japanese side in July 2024, Bakayoko has quickly become a fan favorite at the Sapporo Dome. Standing at 1.93m (6’4”), the former Coventry City and Bolton Wanderers striker has provided a unique focal point for the team’s attack.

During the 2025 J2 League campaign, he netted seven goals in 32 appearances, demonstrating his ability to lead the line, win aerial duels, and hold up play all crucial as the club navigated a challenging season following relegation from the J1 League.

The timing of Bakayoko’s extension is significant, signalling his commitment to the club’s promotion push. “This season has been challenging, but we have a clear goal: to get this club back where it belongs,” Bakayoko said, reflecting his determination to help Consadole Sapporo return to the top flight of Japanese football.

Under the guidance of manager Kenta Kawai, the club is refining its squad ahead of the 2026 season, which kicks off in February. Retaining an experienced international like Bakayoko provides stability in a position that requires both physical and technical balance.

Bakayoko’s strong domestic performances are matched by his contributions to the Sierra Leone national team, where he has become a reliable presence in World Cup and AFCON qualifiers. His success in Japan highlights the growing trend of African players excelling in Asian football leagues.

With his future secured, Bakayoko will now focus on pre-season preparations ahead of Sapporo’s 2026 opener against Iwaki FC on February 7.

Fans will be eager to see the Leone Stars striker lead the attack as the club aims for a strong start in their promotion campaign.
