APC Aspirant Ady Macauley Labels Zainab Sheriff Conviction Politically Motivated

APC flagbearer aspirant Ady Macauley has described the trial and conviction of Zainab Sheriff as politically motivated, alleging that the case was fast-tracked and influenced by political considerations.

Speaking on Liberty Online TV, Macauley argued that Sheriff’s remarks did not violate the laws of Sierra Leone, maintaining that they constituted an expression of opinion rather than a criminal offence.

He referenced provisions in the Anti-Corruption Act 2008 and the Public Elections Act 2022, noting that electoral offences such as vote rigging and abuse of office are punishable under existing laws.

According to Macauley, Sheriff was reported to have stated that individuals found guilty of rigging elections or abusing public office should face the death penalty, including their “bloodlines”—a statement that formed part of the case against her.

While distancing himself from that position, Macauley said he believes such remarks fall within the scope of free expression in public discourse.

He also drew a comparison with comments attributed to the Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Francis Ben Kaifala, who he said had previously suggested that corruption could be addressed through severe penalties, including the death penalty.

Macauley argued that both statements reflect strong opinions on deterring corruption and electoral malpractice, describing them as morally comparable.

He emphasized that his position should not be interpreted as an endorsement of such views, but rather as a defence of the right to express opinions.

Macauley further maintained that public debate must allow space for differing perspectives, even on sensitive national issues such as corruption and electoral misconduct.
