APC Postpones District Elections Following Fatal Electoral Incident
The All People’s Congress (APC) has officially postponed its upcoming District Elections from September 19 to September 26, 2026, following a violent electoral incident that left one security officer dead and multiple others injured.
In a public notice released on Thursday, September 17, by its National Secretariat, the opposition party confirmed that the decision was taken in consultation with the Independent Elections Management Committee (IEMC) to allow time to stabilize the situation and address pending grievances.
According to party officials, violence broke out during recent lower-level party elections, directly targeting electoral personnel and security staff deployed to monitor the proceedings. Several individuals sustained severe injuries and remain hospitalized, while a deployed security officer succumbed to fatal injuries.
Unrest has been reported across multiple constituencies during the APC’s internal election cycle. In Pujehun, local reports connected a fatal military vehicle crash involving Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) personnel to security operations around the Constituency 100 elections. Independent verification of the exact sequence of events remains ongoing.
“The National Secretariat and the IEMC have agreed that the District Elections be rescheduled from Saturday, 19th September 2026, to Saturday, 26th September 2026,”
the party statement read, emphasizing the necessity of properly concluding outstanding electoral processes.
To ensure fair participation across all districts, the APC leadership has instructed the Independent Elections Complaints Board (IECB) to expedite the review and resolution of all pending election petitions prior to the new vote date.
Party leadership urged all aspirants, delegates, members, and stakeholders to adjust their schedules accordingly and maintain order ahead of the rescheduled elections.
In its closing remarks, the APC expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased security officer and wished a full and speedy recovery to those undergoing medical treatment.
