President Julius Maada Bio has issued a national appeal for all Sierra Leoneans to observe a National Remembrance Week by wearing a white ribbon or cloth from 14 to 21 January 2026. This period precedes the country's inaugural National Remembrance Day on 18 January.
In a statement from State House, President Bio explained that the white ribbon serves as a powerful symbol of peace, healing, and national unity. He urged citizens to utilize this time for collective reflection on the nation’s history, to honor past sacrifices, and to reinforce communal solidarity.
“Let us remember our past, embrace peace, and strengthen national bonds,” the President affirmed, underscoring the critical importance of widespread participation in this historic week of reflection.
This initiative is a key component of the government's broader commitment to fostering reconciliation and national cohesion. Citizens are strongly encouraged to publicly display the white ribbon as a tangible sign of their solidarity and unwavering commitment to a peaceful future.
President Bio concluded that through this collective participation, Sierra Leoneans will honor the nation’s journey toward unity and healing, reinforcing the shared duty to build a harmonious and prosperous society.
