Blyden Criticizes Security Failures Amid Mobile Money Scam Surge

Following a warning from the Minister of Information and Civic Education, Hon. Chernor Bah, regarding a rise in mobile money scams, Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden has launched a sharp critique of the current administration’s security architecture while outlining a path for future reform.

The discourse began when Minister Bah cautioned the public to verify identities before sharing information or transferring funds, noting that he had personally been targeted by a scam message on WhatsApp.

Dr. Blyden, a former government official, responded by arguing that the ability of scammers to utilize established mobile phone numbers linked to legitimate services serves as a serious indictment of the administration’s national security systems. She questioned why the issue has persisted for so long, arguing that national security institutions possess the authority to effectively counter such threats.

Furthermore, Dr. Blyden criticized members of the National Security Council (NSC), for discussing the scams rather than implementing stronger institutional measures. Citing her previous experience on the NSC, she described the current situation as a profound failure of the country’s security framework.

In response to the growing public concern over digital fraud, Dr. Blyden presented a policy commitment, pledging that an APC government under her leadership would make the integrity of mobile money identity systems a top priority. She vowed to take immediate action on her first day as President to implement stronger verification protocols, aiming to safeguard citizens and restore confidence in the nation's digital financial services.
