A police officer and his girlfriend have been committed to the High Court to face trial after allegedly being caught with over 700 wraps of Cannabis Sativa.
The accused, Officer Augustine Tamba Saffa and Isha Conteh, appeared before Magistrate Mustapha Briama Jah at Freetown Magistrate Court No. 1 on Monday, October 27, 2025. The committal follows several weeks of preliminary hearings.
They face two charges: possession of a prohibited drug and dealing in a prohibited drug without lawful authority.
The incident reportedly occurred on September 1, 2025, at Yakama Street, New Site, Kenema, in Sierra Leone’s Eastern Province. According to the indictment, Officer Saffa was found with 799 wraps of Cannabis Sativa, while Isha Conteh was found with three parcels of the same substance at the same location and time.
During the committal proceedings, Magistrate Jah said the prosecution had established a prima facie case against both defendants. He noted that witness testimonies corroborated each other and that the physical evidence the cannabis wraps was properly tendered and admitted.
“The evidence before this court is sufficient to warrant committal to the High Court,” Magistrate Jah stated.
Both defendants expressed their intention to defend themselves in the High Court. They signed committal forms and were remanded in custody Saffa to the Male Correctional Centre and Conteh to the Female Correctional Centre pending their next High Court appearance.
The case will now proceed to the High Court, where full evidence and arguments will be presented.
