Chief Justice Orders Release of Kailahun Inmates Over Minor Offences

In a direct measure to alleviate prison overcrowding, Chief Justice Komba Kamanda has ordered the immediate release of several inmates convicted of petty offences at the Kailahun Correctional Centre following a comprehensive case review.
During his official visit to the facility, the Chief Justice personally evaluated the files of convicted individuals, paying particular attention to minor infractions and the proportion of time already served relative to their original sentences.
Among the cases reviewed was that of an individual imprisoned for stealing a single kilogramme of cocoa, valued at NLe 80—underscoring the low-level nature of the offences targeted in the judicial review.
Inmates deemed eligible were granted release on the spot.
Officials noted that the initiative forms part of broader systemic efforts by the Judiciary to reform sentence evaluations and reduce severe congestion in correctional facilities nationwide.
Before their departure, Chief Justice Kamanda cautioned the freed individuals against reoffending, calling on them to integrate productively into society and respect the law.
