Chief Minister Calls for Constructive, Policy-Driven Opposition Politics

Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has called for more constructive and policy-driven opposition politics, urging the All People’s Congress (APC) to elect leaders with “depth, substance and character” as Sierra Leone’s democratic space continues to evolve.

In a public statement, Sengeh said the fundamental difference between the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the APC is ideological, describing the SLPP as a progressive social democratic party focused on human capital development and institutional reform.

He cited initiatives such as the establishment of social security systems, the creation of the National Revenue Authority, the introduction of free quality school education, and the removal of the death penalty as examples of the party’s governance approach.

The Chief Minister criticised what he described as inexperienced and rhetoric-driven opposition politics, warning that governance requires serious policy engagement rather than social media trends or confrontational language.

“We need opposition leaders with depth, substance and character,” he said, adding that political participation should prioritise dialogue and national development over boycotts or inflammatory rhetoric.

Sengeh encouraged APC members to select credible leaders in their internal elections who can engage meaningfully on governance issues, stressing that both government and opposition have a shared responsibility in building a more inclusive and accountable democracy.

“When I say together we will deliver, I mean together as government and progressive opposition members,” he added.

His remarks come amid heightened political debate between the country’s two main parties over governance, accountability, and the role of the opposition in national development.
