The parliamentary opposition, led by the Honourable Abdul Kargbo, has announced the immediate suspension of all legislative activities until the National Secretary General of the All People’s Congress (APC), Lansana Dumbuya Esq., is released from police custody.
Speaking to the media while leading a peaceful procession of opposition MPs to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters, Hon. Kargbo stated that this action is taken in solidarity with Mr. Dumbuya and emphasizes the critical importance of safeguarding democratic space.
He further confirmed the detention of Mohamed Moriba, the APC’s Bo District Public Relations Officer, at the CID, which intensifies the party’s call for their immediate release.
“All parliamentary proceedings are suspended until the Secretary General is released,” Hon. Kargbo affirmed. “Our objective is to ensure the integrity of democratic processes and prevent the suppression of the opposition’s voice.”
The Members of Parliament held a brief engagement with CID officials to press for the prompt release of their party leadership. Hon. Kargbo indicated that the opposition awaits a formal response from the head of the CID before determining subsequent actions.
Expressing deep concern, he described the situation as an undermining of electoral credibility, noting that a significant number of APC Members of Parliament believe the recent elections were compromised. Hon. Kargbo cautioned that the opposition has prepared additional strategic measures should Mr. Dumbuya remain in detention.
The opposition’s suspension of parliamentary duties signifies a marked escalation in the political tensions surrounding the detention of APC officials and highlights growing concerns regarding the state of democratic freedoms within Sierra Leone.
