On Wednesday 20th May, 2026, Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh led a high-level delegation to the Nant Energy construction site in Kissy. During the visit, he officially announced that the 108MW LPG/LNG Generation Project has surpassed the 50 percent completion milestone.
In a formal update shared via "The Chief’s Diary," Dr. Sengeh characterized the initiative as a pivotal component of President Julius Maada Bio’s energy transformation strategy. The facility is scheduled for commissioning in August 2027 and is projected to fulfill approximately 70 percent of the national grid's total energy demand.
The Chief Minister further noted that since 2018, the Bio administration has successfully secured over US$1 billion in capital investments dedicated to the development of Sierra Leone’s energy sector.
He underscored several strategic initiatives currently in progress, notably the $480 million Southern Transmission Line project—supported by the Millennium Challenge Corporation—which aims to enhance distribution across key urban centers. Additionally, a $78 million Northern Transmission Line initiative is slated to commence operations later this year.
Dr. Sengeh also cited substantial investments exceeding $100 million in solar energy infrastructure across various regions, including Lungi, Newton, and Kamakwei.
Regarding rural electrification, he stated that the CLSG project has successfully integrated numerous communities into the national grid. Furthermore, it is reported that more than 50 chiefdom headquarters are now equipped with solar-powered electricity.
While acknowledging the technical and operational challenges facing the energy sector, particularly within the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), the Chief Minister affirmed that comprehensive reforms are being implemented to ensure long-term efficiency, affordability, and sustainability.
Additionally, he revealed that Sierra Leone is diversifying into renewable energy innovations, including the inception of the nation’s inaugural wind farm project on Bonthe Island.
According to Dr. Sengeh, the visiting delegation comprised the Minister of Energy and his technical team, representatives from the U.S. Embassy and the Millennium Challenge Corporation, and senior officials from the Sierra Leone Ports Authority, Customs, and disaster management agencies.
The Chief Minister highlighted the project's impact on local employment, noting that Sierra Leoneans constitute 90 percent of the Nant Energy workforce, with women representing approximately 22 percent of the personnel.
Statistical data provided by the Chief Minister indicates that national electricity access has doubled from 18 percent in 2018 to over 36 percent at present. The government maintains a strategic objective to achieve 72 percent national coverage by the year 2030.
The administration maintains that ongoing investments in thermal, solar, and transmission infrastructure will yield significant improvements in national electricity access, addressing public concerns regarding power supply stability and service interruptions.
