Court Mandates SLBA Election Reforms With Strict Payment Caveat
The High Court of Sierra Leone has issued a landmark ruling aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability in the upcoming Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) executive elections.
Presiding Judge Justice Mark Ngegba has mandated the Association to implement several critical reforms to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
Central to the court's directive is the requirement for the SLBA to publish a comprehensive list of eligible voters by July 29, 2026.
To ensure the accuracy of this list, the court ruled that only bank payment slips submitted prior to the May 29, 2026, deadline will be accepted as valid proof of payment for registration, annual subscriptions, and conference fees.
This measure establishes bank records as the exclusive form of voter verification.
In addition to voter transparency, the SLBA is ordered to release its audited financial statements and bank records for the period of May 2024 to June 2026.
These documents must be made available to all members by July 30, 2026.
Justice Ngegba further emphasized that the upcoming elections must be conducted in strict accordance with the Association’s Memorandum and Articles of Association, reinforcing the necessity of adhering to established governance frameworks to maintain public and professional confidence.
