CSO Consortium Commends Parliament, Urges Supreme Court Clarification

The Civil Society Consortium on Service Delivery and Accountability has formally commended the leadership of Parliament for its adherence to constitutional protocols during the ongoing deliberations on the 2025 Constitutional Amendment Bill.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Consortium specifically highlighted the Speaker of Parliament’s decision to refer the "two-thirds majority" requirement to the Supreme Court as a benchmark for democratic maturity. 

The group reasoned that by seeking judicial clarification, Parliament has demonstrated a profound respect for the separation of powers and the necessity of legal certainty in matters of national governance.

“This move signals a commitment to the rule of law over political expediency,” the Consortium noted, emphasizing that such institutional transparency is vital for public trust. 

While praising the Attorney-General’s collaborative efforts with the legislature, the group also expressed concerns regarding the recent walkout by the opposition All People’s Congress (APC). 

The Consortium argued that while dissent is a hallmark of democracy, the floor of Parliament remains the most effective arena for resolving such disputes through rigorous debate rather than withdrawal.

The group concluded by urging the Supreme Court to expedite its interpretation of the mandate to ensure the reform process remains inclusive, lawful, and aligned with the protections of citizens’ rights.
